Lantos Votes his as Conscience, or So It Would Seem

A US congressional committee has voted to recognize the Armenian genocide, leaving Turkey all aflutter and Israel apologetic. The Israeli ambassador to Turkey told the Turks that "Israel has done everything it could to stop the Armenian genocide resolution pending at the US Congress."

Well that's interesting. What business is it of Israel how the U.S. Congress votes on the Armenian genocide? It's even more interesting that Israel would apologize to Turkey over a vote in the American Congress. The implication is that Israel had the responsibility and power to prevent that vote and it failed to do it. Nobody ever has to apologize for something they had no power to change in the first place. You only apologize when you had the power to do something and for some reason failed to deliver.

And that brings up another matter. Tom Lantos, chairman of the House foreign affairs committee, voted for the Armenian genocide resolution. Now that really is surprising. Israel desperately wanted the resolution not to succeed. And if Lantos had opposed the resolution it would not have succeeded. Yet he voted for it anyway.

How come? He surely, at this stage of the game, has not suddenly decided to start casting votes on principle instead of on the basis of what's good for Israel. So what explains his vote?
