Veteran Arctic explorer, Will Steiger, has just come back from several months on the northern Canadian sea ice. He went there, in part, to publicize the danger that global warming poses to polar bears. He expected to find a world full of dying starving polar bears. What he found instead was more polar bears than he'd ever before seen. Furthermore, they were happy bears. They were very curious and totally unafraid. They would wander right into camp. It made him pretty nervous but the polar bears were not aggressive at all. They were too fat and content from eating seals.
The reporter writing about Steiger's trip doesn't seem to notice the contradiction between the purpose of his trip and what he actually it encountered out there in the ice, perhaps because Steiger doesn't seem to notice it either. He apparently is so convinced that polar bears are an endangered species he doesn't believe his own eyes.
