Maybe He Should Have Called Them "distinguished gentleman of the Chinese persuasion"

Ted Turner made a big mistake the other day. In speaking to the Bay Area Council about the intelligence and industry of Chinese Americans, he used the word "Chinamen." As perhaps it is to be expected these days, the leadership of the Chinese communityin San Francisco was aghast at his casual use of such a callous, insensitive, racially charged epithet. They demanded an apology, which he promptly gave, and a commitment by him to sponsor a program in ethnic awareness.

Poor Ted. What on earth was he thinking to suppose he could call men from China "Chinamen?" He should have called them "Englishmen" or "Frenchmen." No one would have noticed and now he'd be home free.
