Useless Titles

I'm forever registering on one web site or another and the one thing I notice is that some many of them require you to list your title. Well I'm plain old Mr. Ciotti. I don't know what adding a mister to my name does for me. But if you omit specifying your title, the programs won't let you register. I was thinking perhaps that they do that because there are some people with real titles, such as doctors, who want their accomplishments to be recognized. Now I'm thinking it has nothing to do with that. It's a marketing issue. They just want to know which, if any, of their readers has any money.
